Mosquito Prevention at DCH Summer Camp

Dear Camp Families,

We want to make you aware that the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has confirmed that a mosquito sample collected in Dedham tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The current risk level for our area remains low.

While this news is concerning, we want to reassure you that Dedham Community House has a comprehensive mosquito management plan in place throughout the summer to help reduce the presence of mosquitoes on our campus.

Our prevention efforts include:

  • Weekly mosquito control treatments performed by the Norfolk County Mosquito Control District throughout our campus from the start of summer through Labor Day.

  • Monthly mosquito and tick treatments by our licensed pest management company.

  • Ongoing monitoring of our grounds to identify and eliminate standing water wherever possible.

In addition to these efforts, we encourage families to help protect campers by:

  • Applying an EPA-approved insect repellent before arriving at camp.

  • Dressing campers in lightweight clothing that provides additional coverage when practical.

  • Checking your child for mosquito bites and ticks after returning home each day.

West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who become infected experience no symptoms or only mild illness. Severe illness is uncommon and is more likely to occur in adults over the age of 50. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Town of Dedham continue to monitor mosquito activity throughout the season.

The health and safety of our campers and staff remain our highest priority. We will continue working closely with local and state public health officials and will share any important updates should conditions change.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your continued trust and partnership. We look forward to another safe and fun summer at DCH.
